User o3x2017-09-22
Some times components just wear out, sometimes something can cause it, even a small surge or dip in the power.
U1
User 1th2017-09-22
yes it was working perfectly fine like a week ago. I turned it off one day. went to go turn it back on. an that's when I started to run into issues

❗First of all: Check how much RAM does your CPU support. Do that by searching "ARK [Intel CPU model (eg i5-6040 M)]" on Google. I believe it will support at least 12Gb just fine since it has 64bit capability. Your options: 2+4 = 6Gb RAM 4+4 = 8Gb RAM 0+8 = 8Gb RAM 2+8 = 10Gb RAM 4+8 8+8 You got the point.
U1
User 1ku2017-09-18
I suggest go with your second option

You can install them in any way you can, but you should be wary of DDR types before you install them.

User vm42017-09-17
Having different size sticks on any slot is fine. What matters is the clock speed of RAMs. You can have 1 of 4Gb and 1 of 2Gb RAM sticks but if (assume that) 1 of them has 1600Mhz clock speed and other has 1800Mhz. Both RAMs will run on 1600Mhz speed.

Hi Everyone, I have a question on Hardware of my laptop - RAM upgrade Product Name: HP Pavillion DV6 - 2125 TX Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit) I currently have 2 RAM slots with 2 GB RAM cards inserted in each. So total is 4GB now. I want total of 8GB RAM now. My questions: 1) Should I get 2 cards of 4GB each? Is it mandatory that always both slots should have equal capacity RAM cards? 2) Or Can I remove both 2GB Ram cards & insert one 8 GB card in one slot only? 3) Or Can I just get one card of 4GB RAM and replace any 2GB card in there? so total becomes 6 GB, is this allowed? (I need to upgrade because I work on Java and I need to use multiple IDEs and it does need higher size RAM) Please advise. Thanks in advance!! :)

However, those solutions require software to make the process work, so you would need to find a way to initially plug in the desktop to a monitor to set them up. I think I'm right in saying that there is no direct way to use the laptop screen as an external monitor though.

What was done prior to this behavior change? Did you flash a new BIOS? Add/change drivers? Does your BIOS allow control over CPU core usage? Have you tried resetting the BIOS to default settings and restarting the system?

To me that looks like it is saying the number of processors. Right click on "My PC" and click on properties, it will say there how many cores you have.
U1
User 1s62017-09-12
But the problem is that why it is showing only 1 core
Uo
User o3x2017-09-12

Battery Replacement would be a better option than uninstalling updates.
Uv
User vm42017-09-11
Did you had better battery life when you bought it? If so, I can think of 2 common reasons. 1. Li-ion batteries experience 15-20% drop on capacity every year due to aging. If battery is over 3 years old then replacing is only option. 2. There are so many background tasks running that you aren't aware of. Click Ctrl + Shift + ESC together to open task manager > Go to start up applications > disable unnecessary applications. (There are also drivers are listed there such as touchpad, printer and audio. Double check before disabling something) > restart computer (will take longer to start)
Uo
User o3x2017-09-10
Was going to say removing updates is more likely to increase battery use from the extra potential malware running itself in the background... 😜
U8
User 8ku2017-09-10
In most cases, battery life will be better WITH the updates. Updates tending to have a negative impact on battery life are feature updates that add more background tasks to the system. The other side effect of removing updates from a system is the increased vulnerability caused by the removal of security patches.
U1
User 1s62017-09-10

It ain't that bad when you are trained on what things you can work with. Let's say the company trust us by enabling this permissions so we can fix our own computers issues. We obviously have the local IT team but we barely need their help. The Linus video was a little more relevant in my case (pun intended), because mine is about as old as his. I'll have to think about it, though, because I've actually never built a PC before

You want a sleeper. I know that is a funny name but a sleeper is a name given to thing that looks old but performs better than more modern ones. Check Linux Tech Tips channel on YouTube about sleeper PC 😉

Or I'm thinking of modding the case and putting a modern computer inside of the old case. Has anyone done that here?

If I got one, how would I transfer my files to it?
U8
User 8ku2017-08-02
Pick up a cheap NIC for it. I wouldn't bother trying wireless, but an old 3Com or Intel card should work. I keep several around just for those cases someone comes in with ancient systems.
U1
User 1f92017-08-02
How would I do that? I'm not sure that it even has Ethernet
U8
User 8ku2017-08-02
Put it on your network. W95 had major issues recognizing rewritable discs. W98 was only slightly better.

User 1f92017-08-02
If I had a Windows 95 desktop with a floppy drive and a CD ROM, how would I get files to it? It won't recognize my CD-RW that I put into it, b it recognizes some other disc that I found already inside of it.

Before we accuse the switch or Easter Egg a solution, how's the cable that connects the switch to the outside world? Let's start simple. Also, have you tried rebooting the switch?
U8
User 8ku2017-07-27
Make & model of the switch? Static or dynamic addressing on your LAN? If dynamic, what is providing DHCP services?

User 1ku2017-07-27
ya you have to try changeing your hardware after that you can come to some conclussion

CD Partition doesn't require fixing because it isn't broken. Rest of flash can be formatted as needed which should be enough for booting OS. I believe important step is to choose OS part of the flash while booting because CD part will have priority by default.
U1
User 17b2017-07-26
Long story short: That CD partition is read-only and doesn't look like there's any way to fix it. I recommend you try using another flash drive because even if it can be fixed, it's might be a long and hard process.
U1
User 1f92017-07-25
Oh. I'll give the flash drive another try at hosting Linux and I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks!

User vm42017-07-25
It sounds like you choosed an Installation method which removed Windows mbr position. It doesn't have anything to do with flash drive or Manjaro. Of you have a MBR formatted HDD then you are limited to 4 partitions.
U1
User 1f92017-07-25
I tried it a couple of weeks ago and while installing Manjaro the installer told me that there was an error with the source of the install. I don't know if that had to do with the flash drive, but it corrupted the dual-booted computer's Windows MBR and forced me to get it repaired professionally. Does that sound like a flash drive problem or just a bad Manjaro image?
Uv
User vm42017-07-25
did you try to create bootable drive using only that partition? That may work with/without other partition. And make sure Flash drive has priority over CD as booting drive because your computer maybe going for CD partition in Flash drive. Best would be to manually choose boot media during BIOS. Usually F12 brings that menu but if there are any holes around power socket click that with a needle while PC is off. Some menu will come. Go for boot while bootable flash was inserted.
U1
User 1f92017-07-25
Did you find a way to fix it? Maybe I'll just have to buy a normal flash drive if I ever really need it.
U1
User 17b2017-07-25
I have a flash drive like that too...

User vm42017-07-25
Did you try to view your disk in Gparted? It is a disk partition manager formatter tool for Linux.
U1
User 1f92017-07-24
Yes, but it only wiped the "Removable Disk" drive. It's H: in the picture and off to the left side.
U8
User 8ku2017-07-24
Have you tried the clear command in diskpart? It should reset the entire device to an empty state.
U1
User 1f92017-07-24
I guess that there is no way to remove the second partition on the drive, in that case.
U8
User 8ku2017-07-24
Only ones with a hardware read-only switch but that affects the entire device, not a single partition.
Uv
User vm42017-07-24
I used to flash usb as Cd for installing OS. That sounds pretty normal. It is formatted that way.
U1
User 1f92017-07-24
This is going to sound strange, but the partition that the security features is in isn't recognized by my system as a drive: it seems to be a CD to my system. Has anyone else ever come across this in a flash drive?

I use gparted for disk partitioning and formatting. You can find it in disk repository. Command to install: sudo apt-get install gparted
U1
User 1f92017-07-23
Never mind that. I'll figure out how to use diskpart.
U1
User 1f92017-07-23
I could try, but I get an error message when I try to do do anything with it that says that the file system can't be edited, or something along those lines. Is diskpart a tool that's built into Linux? My main laptop runs Linux Mint 18.1
U8
User 8ku2017-07-22
Have you tried deleting it using diskpart?

User 1f92017-07-22
I need some help with a USB stick of mine. It's a 16GB stick from EMTEC and was advertised to be password protected. I didn't necessarily care about this feature until I wanted to make it a bootable Linux USB. I've tried but my computer wont recognize it as a bootable medium (and yes, I've done it before and know that it can boot from USB). I think that a second partition that stores that password protecting program is keeping me from booting, but the partition is read-only and I can't seem to find a way to delete the partition. Does anyone have a way that I can delete this read-only second partition from my USB flash drive?
